Cate Smail, MA, HCPC, MBACP, BAAT
Art Psychotherapist, EMDR practitioner and Clinical Supervisor.
* I also offer online sessions. Please get in touch for full details.
“I provide a calm and confidential art therapy space which encourages self-exploration though the creative process. I work in a psychodynamic way, dealing with deep rooted issues in order to enable growth and recovery. I use a ‘person-centred’ approach, allowing clients to develop a sense of self in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment and supporting them to find solutions to their problems.”
Private Therapy sessions
I have two North London practices. Sessions are available at my art therapy studio in East Finchley and at the Kentish Town Health Centre. Please email me for more information on current rates and terms & conditions. See below for testimonials.
EMDR therapy for treating trauma and PTSD
I am also a trained EMDR therapist, and offer this therapy alongside art therapy and/or counselling for trauma and PTSD. Find out more about EMDR therapy here.
Areas of Specialisation
I have an integrative approach to working with adults. In the past I have worked in NHS and community settings. I have experience in running groups, workshops and working one-to-one. I have a special interest in working with trauma. I work with those experiencing a range of mental health issues from depression and anxiety to dealing with family and relationship issues.

” I am a complete convert to art therapy now… it is so powerful and has helped me at a much deeper level than any other therapy I have had… I would recommend it as a form of therapy to anyone who is considering having therapy or counselling.“
Jane Beinart, Individual therapy
“I highly recommend Cate’s art therapy sessions as they’ve been an enjoyable way to explore my emotional landscape. Working with art materials seems less daunting than mainstream speaking therapies… Afterwards, your artwork remains as a tangible piece of work achieved on the self, looking back at you.”
C.A, Group therapy participant
“You’re an amazing therapist. Thank you again for listening and understanding…”
A.T, Individual therapy
“I am now starting a new phase of my life and truly able to accept what I cannot change… I have found a new confidence in living, and a new personal optimism. Thank you.”
Marilyn Stevens, Individual therapy
“From day ONE I felt incredibly comfortable with Cate and able to speak completely freely, openly and honestly about everything and anything… she taught me the wonderful skills to open myself up and express myself freely, through my artwork, safely, no matter how painful and difficult the subjects were! Cate gave me the confidence, from session ONE, to express myself in a therapeutic way, using a wonderful selection of fun art mediums…”
Ness, Individual therapy
“I loved the Divorce Recovery group and would recommend it to others… thank you Cate for leading the group so well.”
Emma Featherstone, Group therapy participant
