Personal Statement
Alex Trotter
Art Psychotherapist
Through my experience working with adults with a Mental Health diagnosis and Adults with Learning Disabilities, I understand the positive effects of artistic expression has on their wellbeing, especially for those who find verbal communication challenging.
When working with children; play and creatively are naturally entwined. Drawing on my experience as in therapeutic play work I engage with children to create a safe environment where the natural flow of the play can enable children to work through difficult feelings.
My approach is non-directive and non-judgemental. I believe tailoring the therapy to suit the individuals needs of the client to create a calm, friendly and safe space for them to explore personal feelings at their own pace.
Through the non-directive approach, I allow the client to explore the art materials to create their own unique style to communicate. The process of making can reflect their internal thoughts through the medium of art symbolically. They can also be used as a tactile instrument in encouraged to the flow dialogue or in silence for thoughtful self-reflection.
I work with adults, children and those with learning disabilities.
