Personal Statement
Lauren Degge
Art Psychotherapist
I am a HCPC registered and BAAT accredited Art Psychotherapist based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and online. I currently work within my private practice and within schools and services.
I have experience working with children who have experienced trauma, abuse, mental health difficulties such as anxiety, self-harm and eating disorders. My experience has predominantly been with special educational needs, autism, challenging behaviour and adopted/fostered children. I have also worked with families in my dyadic work and with foster carers. I also work with adults experiencing mental health difficulties, and have a special interest in working with psychosis, personality disorders and dissociative personality disorder.
My approach to art therapy is psychodynamic, which is based on the view that our past experiences influence our present behaviours, attitudes and reactions. It focuses on the unconscious and aims to support clients to gain insight and awareness to understand why they behave a certain way. This can help people to understand themselves to aid recovery and support improved self-esteem, confidence and self-worth. However, I also offer an integrative approach using person-centred art therapy which is chosen to best suit my client’s needs.
I advocate the importance of a safe, non-judgemental environment where people can express themselves freely. I believe that everyone has the ability to be creative regardless of their ability or background.
Qualifications:
MA Art Therapy. BA(Hons) Creative Expressive Therapies. I have an enhanced DBS certificate, professional liabilities insurance, and attend frequent clinical supervision with an experienced supervisor.
